I mentioned in my page 'About Us' that one of the major source of being illiterate in terms of technology of some of us is due to 'Digital Divide'. Many some of you are not familiar with this technology term. So, today I will share to you different meanings and definitions of Digital Divide from different sources.
1. According to Wikipedia.Org
Digital Divide is an economic and social inequality with regard to access to, use of, or impact of information and communication technologies (ICT). The divide within countries (such as the digital divide in the United States) may refer to inequalities between individuals, households, businesses, or geographic areas, usually at different socioeconomic levels or other demographic categories. The divide between differing countries or regions of the world is referred to as the Global Digital Divide, examining this technological gap between developing and developed countries on an international scale.
2. According to Whatis.TechTarget.com
Digital Divide is a term that refers to the gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology, and those that don’t or have restricted access. This technology can include telephone, television, personal computers and the Internet.
3. According to InternetWorldStats.com
The Digital Divide, or the digital split, is a social issue referring to the differing amount of information between those who have access to the Internet (specially broadband access) and those who do not have access. The term became popular among concerned parties, such as scholars, policy makers, and advocacy groups, in the late 1990s.
4. According to DigitalResponsibility.org
Interaction between human and computers has greatly increased as we embark on the twenty-first century. The ability to access computers and the internet has become increasingly important to completely immerse oneself in the economic, political, and social aspects of not just America, but of the world. However, not everyone has access to this technology. The idea of the ‘Digital Divide’ refers to the growing gap between the underprivileged members of society, especially the poor, rural, elderly, and handicapped portion of the population who do not have access to computers or the internet; and the wealthy, middle-middle class, and young Americans living in urban and suburban areas who have access.
This technology term is one of my unforgettable tech terms learned in my Information Technology class. I shared this term to you in order for you to be aware on how digital divide affects in the society we lived in.
